25.12.13

!

On Christmas Eve we ate a cutting boards worth of cheese and meat and lingonberry sparkling drink, put on our matching pajamas, opened one present and watched Superman (Joshua put together his Ninja Turtle legos). And then the four of us kids slept in the living room- Katrina kicked Joshua is the face all night and Jarrod woke us all up at 0500. So we had the perfect setup to Christmas morning!

Between a Will the Thrill jersey, a gorgeous Kate Spade, and a Pendleton for the mom (who's always wanted one and couldn't stop smiling when she opened it) and all the paper everywhere making kitten look insane it was a wonderful day! It's cheesy but true: family is the nicest present of all to have on Christmas.

And finally kitten fell exhausted into a bag and napped.

10.12.13

Christmas tree!

We picked a Christmas tree! With our friends Cody and Tiffany and my parents- a triple date for trees! Tiffany took these photos (the same Tiffany and Cody of my brother's engagement photos) and I love them. Do I associate evergreens with winter because of Christmas trees or because they are the only color left in the grey PNW or just right now since these photos?

Also. Bison sweater.

8.12.13

Wintertime.

It's winter so we bought some flannel sheets that Roo likes to snuggle in and we went to Seattle to watch the snow fall at the mall. And saw Hunger Games. In other news we've hung our stockings with care and decorated our little tree and purchased a moose cookie cutter. That's all. This week it's sewing kitten a stocking and doing the very last bit of shopping (even when you're done there are just so many good gifts out there)!

29.11.13

CUUUUUUTE!

I love how these photos could have come straight out of the seventies. Such a sweet engagement set! We chose a tiny Blue Spruce today and I wore my new bison sweater from Black Friday (ohboy!). It's been a lovely  Thanksgiving weekend.

24.11.13

I say bison you say buffalo.

I have been enchanted by two animals for the last few (5) years: bison and otters. I mean seriously, who doesn't find otters to be perfection? I can't explain the bison bit as neatly. I just think they're great.

These bison photos are great- I love the baby! It looks like snuggle time if snuggle time were an animal.

Giant prints of bison.

Two more!

I have this sweet bison over the mantle, I think he needs a friend.

21.11.13

WNWR: husband.

Oh man! Our first married Christmas and our first Christmas hosting Christmas (I think everyone is going to curl up in our tiny apartment so we can wake up together)! Oh man. It's going to be great. Just like being married. Do you ever look over in bed and feel like it's crazy how lucky you've been? Joshua is better than ice cream and the perfect nap. I love present shopping for him! But I also get weirdly anxious that presents won't be perfect. It's ridiculous I know.

x (kitten signature)

Who doesn't want to go see a taping of Ellen? We spend more time watching Ellen videos than doing anything else on the internet around here. And Joshua can dance. He was made for Ellen!!!

He definitely needs some wool socks to help combat winter in our frigid apartment! I love this simple old design.

A classic apron (I think he probably is tired of wearing my girly lace one).

A memoir.

20.11.13

MISC

Joshua and I had date night tonight. Thermals, wool socks, steaks and The Internship. Now it's off to bed. I live the perfect life of a grandmother! I made a list of the last seven things we need to finish Christmas today and we bought cloves to try out clementine clove whatevers... Christmas is coming. Get ready.
Also I don't want to find a photo. I'm saving energy for Christmas.

Ellen underoos.

Happy otters!

Animals at Arsenal.

Refined space.

11.11.13

WNWR: sister.

I held off as long as I could. I promise. But Walking Dead is sucking all the joy out of itself (although I don't think I ever actually enjoy the season when it's on...) so I need something positive! And what is more positive than Christmas? Nothing!!!

I've just moved past Jarrod and Katrina not being married and don't even bother with that "my brother's girlfriend" business. She's my sister. Things about Katrina: she loves kitties, she is all about the outdoors and fun northwest foods (read: she and Joshua talk about oysters while Jarrod and I gag), and she loves concerts and the summertime. She's basically rad x a million. Also we just saw this musical at the 5th Ave and it was a blast! To cement sisterhood we napped on the couch yesterday afternoon. That is all.

I know it's terrible to give someone a pet, but seriously- this is ten minutes of craigslist. There is no resisting. If she really wanted one absolutely we'd buy her a kitten.

And she definitely needs a teddy for her honeymoon at some young person music festival.

Catalope leggings? I think yes! Wear has never looked so fake. Or cute.

If you have to cook, better do it GOT style! Poor Katrina, I don't watch Game of Thrones so she has to try to explain approximately 1,000 characters to me each time she talks about it. I think this will be ten times faster to read than one of the actual books.

9.11.13

MISC.

It's off to bed for me- Joshua has to be up at 0330. You read that right. Yuck. But what a guy! As for me, I'll be wearing my brand new RL boots I picked up at Goodwill. Big morning for both of us. Kidding. Of course (about me in any case, Joshua is working hard). In other news I could go for a bread bowl and a vacation right about now.

Teeny home.

I hope this is true, because how beautiful?

Neutron cream.

We've been watching Top Gear like mad this week... I doubt this will fade in the coming dark winter. An article from Jeremy Clarkson.

I think this will be my Christmas craft. With a yule goat!

7.11.13

Sweetest.

I get a photo occasionally at work to let me know my family is waiting for me to come home... this one was last weeks. How adorable.

6.11.13

Desolation of Smaug.

If this is to end in fire then we should all burn together.
I am stoked for The Hobbit (and what an outstanding title).
Also Martin Freeman's family history if you're into that sort of thing.

5.11.13

I think it might be time...

For another book week. Namely so I can talk about Nick Hornby for a thousand years.

Nick... sorta.

30.10.13

MISC.

Sicky poo here- I'm curled up with soup and a sandwich and my Halloween costume... anyone else exhausted? I know this is nothing like how tired my patients feel and I can't believe all the things they still manage to do! I'm so impressed by them. I probably should post some real thinking things but this is all I've got tonight. Besides wanting to be in a warm Paris with a baguette and some wine and those shoes!

BEST POPE EVER.

I posted about this home last week but here is the full tour. I love it more the more I see it.

Halloween costume.

More proponents of smiling!

I love her. I can't help it.

Would you live alone in an old hospital to save rent?

Saw this banging nail polish in Better Homes and Gardens. Random right?

Don't forget, Christmas is coming! It's almost time to bring out decorations.

22.10.13

Parents.

And the article in this post.

MISC.

I love our tiny apartment SOOOO MUCH! I'm literally pumping my arms in the air. It keeps us honest about bringing things into the house and keeping neat. And it keeps us close. Unless your in the shower you can's really do anything without the other person being all up in it. Sometimes the shower's not even safe from kitten katten!

I love this house- one thing about tiny houses that I can't reconcile with a home we would live in is the lack of book space! But this one has an entire wall! Everything else we could cut down but I think I've pushed Joshua to the limit on eliminating books. It makes a tiny footprint home seem realistic again.

I know it's Monday but with a possible strike looming tonight at 7PM (here is the link to coupons you can turn in at the register saying you support checkers as well as the countdown clock) I felt the need to prepare for a crazy week. We're getting good practice at saying God is good ALL the time. He was good last night with great fellowship and Walking Dead, but he's also good as we wait in uncertainty today. So. Peace to you all this week as you navigate the chaotic bits of life.

This closet kills me.

What can I use this fabric for?

Onesie, I die. Another!

I love high ceilings and lots of light and the bed! And the roof! I live here. Now.

Look at these teeny apartments.

A photography project.

Heather is going to be in town this weekend! Yay! She is my birthday present from my mother (this is the second time someone has been brought from Portland to be my birthday present, which is weird but really truly one of the best presents ever). So while we play True American, eat ice cream, and maybe figure out a couple of things to make this apartment less rental-y you can enjoy this photo of my kitty in her new favorite toy: a drink holder. We look like terrible parents... there's an empty torn up bag and a drink holder on the floor just lying about. I swear she loves them most!

OH MY DEAR LORD.

You need a 1D mural? I thought so.

Fig and goat cheese bruschetta.

We built this schmiddy!

A great article, real.

A great article, fake.

This coat looks ridiculous in photos but it is gorgeous! The nurse practitioner I work with has one and it's drool worthy.

Have you explored? It's terrible and wonderful. I want to go. I'm ready!

19.9.13

Christmas, christmas!

We just hit the halfway mark on Christmas presents- excluding homemade food bits we're nearly done! If I'm not done before black Friday I start to get anxious... this is normal. I am sure of it. I can't imagine Christmas Eve shopping, how do you get the perfect present? Settling on Christmas seems like it should be illegal. So, fair warning, it might get Christmassy early around these parts. No lights until the day after Christmas but all other bets are off.

This year for Christmas we are having a friend take photos while we choose our Christmas tree- since the family is grown and complete (until grandbabies!) we figured we should get some photos. I vote we all wear plaid but so far only Katrina and I love that.

We're definitely getting one of these to commemorate Christmas 1.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING. HIDE YOUR KIDS, HIDE YOUR WIFE.

17.9.13

So funny.

Anyone else get the craving for Dumb and Dumber sometimes? When Joshua dropped me off at the airport I got to reenact this- although he was driving away with me at the curb. Details.

15.9.13

House Home.

This might sound ridiculous but I promise I'm not trying to be. Do you ever have times where the only safe place is home? When work isn't safe and church isn't safe and the only safe place 1`aT`QW (that was kitty being a helpful typist) is when you walk in the door? I'm totally there right now.

While I desperately want to own a home that I can put hardwood in and paint all white and have cement counters and herbs growing on the counter. Instead I live in a carpeted rental with beige walls and weird plastic tub.

It's cool though. I got this.
I think Joshua and I strongly lean toward a stlye that is 100% modern. And Scandinavian.
But it's not the most practical for where we are now.

AND SO. I think minimalist camp is where we're at. It's a couple of years and then we change or (more likely) move. Not that a house has to be a vignette. But it helps me feel put together to have my house slightly put together.

I think we might add this wallpaper to a wall.

And we've already added this lovely blanket to our bed.

We have some old chairs that I might try this trick on to revamp them, I''m saving for this rug (which will work when we move/change), and I've been looking at these simple thoughts and homes for inspiration.
Oh! And Heather sent me this killer place. Great.

30.8.13

MISC.

I'm turning 25 this weekend so naturally I'm chaperoning a bunch of kids off to Faith Quest. I love our teens. Love makes you do crazy things.
It's been a week guys. Our preacher quit, work has been insane and the house has not been cleaned once. BUT we got gelato last night! And Roo is currently peaking over the computer with just her two paws and nose. Even when bad weeks happen my home feels like a safe place. A port in storm. I'm so thankful to be able to come to that place (the physical place and that place in me).

This is such an interesting topic! It's exciting to read each new one. I'd love to hear mothers from other countries talk about parenting here in America.

A sweet article on man friendships.

I wouldn't say no to a poncho this winter, and they donate 15% of the $$ to a homeless shelter. I dig it.

Love a good timeline!

We've made so many trips to Goodwill you wouldn't believe! And it's so simple to straighten up before bed- the whole house is neat in five minutes. I wouldn't call us minimalists but we've definitely eliminated a lot of things on this list!

I dig this dress for fall.

28.8.13

Interracial-

As if NPR would let us forget the 50 anniversary of the march on Washington (for jobs and freedom)! It's been wonderful to hear stories about people who were there. Today was three people from Detroit, one this woman from the famous photo. I've been thinking about color this week, about unconscious prejudice and family (blood and created) and embracing race without letting it completely define us. This is a fascinating story about race and color being separate entirely.

As weird as it sounds to me to even think it, I'm part of an interracial couple. I read an article once that said when people say they don't notice color or that they are "colorblind" it's as bad as being racist. Because people are different (just like men and women are different right)- not good not bad, just different. And I think I do that with Joshua sometimes. It's easy for me to forget that he's Filipino because I think of him as Joshua. Just like I forget that he's tall and has tattoos and can be rather menacing if you don't know he's the nicest, nerdiest guy to ever live with me. Perhaps I just incorporate him into me, kinda like we do with Jesus (let's be honest even though Jesus looked more like Osama Bin Laden I always first, for an instant, see white Jesus looking off to the side in a white robe with a blue sash).

This ad got tons of talk going and the NYT has a whole section on interracial marriage. My children will be one quarter Filipino and that's a lot! I don't want them to miss out on living in that knowledge. But they'll just be our kids! Eh. I'm not too concerned. Being smothered in love is universal. Did you ever see that movie Babies? Love is love is love.

My husband, smart talking smart walking handsome Joshua wrote a little something about being interracial.

I did not search for a spouse of another color or race or ethnicity. I do not define my relationship through any lens of whiteness or colored. I am a man of color and my wife is white. I embrace our differences. I love them. They make us unique, they contribute to our identity as a couple. Growing up with white parents as an adopted child, I remember my parents encouraging me to understand the complexities of geographical regionalism in an international context to which my personal heritage and identity should be contextualized. They showed me that though I am colored and they are white, most importantly we were family. And so, I hope my relationship with my wife is one that transcends any type of standardization of race. I do not wish for us to be color blind but rather color loving, because ignoring a symptom of discrimination falls into a category of saying that cultural identity is no longer beautiful, but rather something that should be overlooked and feared, homogenizing the human experience. I want us to be color sensitive to each other and our friends of all ethnic backgrounds so that we are able to empathize with others on a deep level of humanity, not out of a passively sympathetic pity of another persons experience. And I believe that we achieve this as we have a multiplicity of friends dear to us ranging from agnostic, black, christian, white, poor, gay, native, et al. Our relationship is wonderful, multi-ration, inter-cultural and beautifully colorful.

27.8.13

The Beets Motel.

Three things and a thought. Thought: or question... will my children care as much about home design as I do? Will they care about history and world religions and politics as we do? Will they love to cook like their father? Will the knowledge they inherit as byproduct of living with Joshua and I seep into their priorities? I suppose it's the age old nature nurture bit, but I can't help but think that some of that will naturally pass on. Without intention. The key is to avoid passing on the negative bits as well I imagine!

(irrigation map on etsy)

Remember Shrute Farms? Joshua and I have decided (not that we're pre-planners) that our guest bedroom with have an irrigation theme. Americana irrigation. Yum.

And it will have a reading nook. Here are two roundups of drool worthy nooks.

Finally, I am totally digging the series about dorm style on apartment therapy- it could alternatively be called affordable and easy ways to theme up a room. I thought this one was the most complete and theme centered but I love them all. Oh to have seen them while in college!

20.8.13

R.C. Wilson

I'm watching Keeping Mum (hilarious, the first ten minutes make me actually laugh out loud) and kitten is sleeping right under my chin. She's spends a lot of time there actually. It's pretty much perfect. Dog people are so snooty about cats but teeny Rooster could win anybody over. She wooed Jarrod who is the most exclusively dog crazy person I know!

It's impossible to imagine we got her only a week ago! We went to the farmers market Saturday and it felt like a month since we met here there, like we've had Roo for forever, like I can't remember our home before her.

She's such a little creature. But she's eating and pooping and playing and then falling asleep on our chests so overall it's success. Maybe babies cry in the night so that parents know they are alive. I know I'd appreciate a check in! Although she is wildly noisy when I first get home before I can get her food fixed. It's outrageous.

Lastly, in kitty news, tonight I was making ice cream and in the process lost the kitty. I kept hearing this tiny meowing and our HUGE couch is just big enough for her to crawl under and there's a rip in the bottom. So I'm freaking out.
Turns out she hopped in a cabinet and then I shut her in with the tupperware. Whoops.

Seriously, look at her. She's adorable.

17.8.13

MISC.

We went to the Farmer's Market today, as we do every Saturday now. And seriously even though we got ice cream cones from the new (less worrisome) Carter's guy I knew it wouldn't be nearly as great a trip as last week. Duh. No new kitty this week!

Although Joshua's oldest friend from childhood is in town and we met up with him at the market. He's a volunteer on the Hawaiian Chieftain and has been sailing the West Coast for a couple of weeks. We toured the boat and when he's got a day off this week we're taking him on a tour of Port Orchard. Hmmm. Well, he can meet Roo and we can go kayaking (she's currently underneath my laptop sleeping in my crossed legs)! And maybe we'll go on a battle cruise. No cannonballs on board unfortunately but you can't have everything. Ha.

I have a weird but undying love for Nicky's hair. Not even the real actresses hair, just the nappy big jail hair. I LOVE IT.

Such a cute baby shower (or any shower) idea.

Mom and I have been to one of these!

Borrowed an ice cream maker to make a variation on this ice cream.

First homes.

Joshua got me thinking...

Just watched this episode again (naughty word be warned)!

And another related Buzzcocks episode. We need this weekly here. Can we replace Wheel Of Fortune. Then it'd be Jeopardy and Buzzcocks. Oh my.

10.8.13

Constant vigilance. Fall is returning.

I, as should all, take Mad Eye Moody very seriously.
Because of this, it is almost fall and with fall comes two important issues: wedge booties and capes. Every year I think, "Is this the year for capes and wedges?" And then each year it's a no. But this year not a no! And least for booties. And for the bison photo.

I fly fairly regularly (a couple times a year) and I wear pretty much the same thing every time. Except I don't have a study go to pair of boots! I love my brown boots from Bass- they took me three weeks in Europe with nary a complaint but a black pair is in my future, especially since I only wear black jeans. And then I remember this post and her adorable booties and presto! Booties. It's going to happen.

I've been listening to this song on and off for months. Still digging it.

9.8.13

MISC.

Why yes, I have been obsessively looking at Westfalia camper vans, how did you know? And planning  road trips to the coast and dreaming of quitting my job and just driving. Ridiculous. But wonderful to imagine. In other news, I bought my first pair of dangly earrings and over baked some banana bread. And made a surprise box for newlywed friends (like this, but more like a child made it). And had friends over for dinner and am working a half day. That's my whole life! Oh! And our wedding photos appeared this week. I'm so in love with Joshua. And Jessi.

This is the coolest remodel of all time. And photos. From AT.

Spencer sent me this. I love my friends.

Mumford tour blog: Chicago.

Still one of my favorite SNL skits.

A wedding.

Man soccer take skill!

4.8.13

Sunday Funday!

Capaldi... I have to admit I'm happy we're back to an older Doctor- since 9 we've been moving younger and more polished and I like that the British are staying the British and not giving a hoot about age or crazy teeth on tv. I'm in the middle of tv drought, no Walking Dead, no Doctor, no Sherlock. I'm one million times more productive though!

(What's up crazy eyes! I love him already.)

This morning I woke up to a phone reminder that I was on praise team and yikes! Did not know that fun fact. But it went okay. And then Thai food and then house cleaning mania and then life group. I have my first day off in a long while tomorrow so we're doing laundry and watching a movie tonight, staying up. The Fighter. Man my life is exciting! Don't be jealous, I have to vacuum like every other day. You know.

1.8.13

Cleaning.

I was on the phone with one of our elders wives last night (for half an hour... weird but nice) and I mentioned to her that I felt like I vacuum ALL THE TIME and she said, "Small apartments, there's no where for the dirt to settle!" And there is the answer.

I find it nice to clean though. Mind clearing. The way some people use running.

Cleaning to this song. I hate that it's so catchy!

23.7.13

Baby Fever!

It's hereeeeee!

I don't actually have baby fever (while lots of children are in my dream future right now I really like sleeping when I like and living in a teeny apartment) but I like to hold babies and coo and look at baby clothes and freak out about the royal baby... just because it's fun. Also hilarious to give every tidbit of royal knowledge I have to my coworkers who think I'm a freak. I also introduced them to the onion and their hilarious coverage of the royal baby.

Although probably unintentional I like that Kate's dress mirrored her mothers.

(not mine, from some news source)

20.7.13

MISC.

It's been a crazy couple of weeks guys: getting married, flying to Tennessee unexpectedly, putting together our apartment while working lots of solo days, both Joshua and I being horridly ill... but I feel like the end of adjusting is near. Thank you's are almost done, the house is almost done, grocery shopping almost done. It's beginning to look like a home. I figure a month after the wedding is an appropriate time to begin normal life again!

(In Portland with my new Timber's shirt)

What a simple summer headband. For Monday's after wild weekends.

Have you seen these portraits of soldiers during war? So beautiful and heartbreaking.

I love breast cancer shirts.

Floral earrings.

This video is hilarious.

I found this recipe at the hairdressers this week- we're making it when people come over because it looks delicious!

I can't keep my excitement inside of my body. OCTOBERRRR!
