30.5.12

Remember Ben Howard?
I bought a $1 Bolt Bus ticket to Portland and I saw him with Deborah (and met Garrison there... it's weird the connections you have with people you don't know). 21 hours in my old home with an old friend. I relish the insight DB brings to conversation.

I've got a sunburn on the tip of my nose.
Giant blisters on my heels from beach volleyball all weekend.
I've got ringing in my ears of beautiful harmonies.
It was a good weekend/week.

MISC.

It's memorial day weekend.
The weekend of church together. Seals on the dock and mist in the morning and cozy cabins and playing games.

(The Sartorialist)

My brother showed this song to me yesterday. It's summer. In a song.

Sweet summer accessory.

This would be perfect in any home (that I would live in)!

Finally! Leather I'd be brave enough to try.

A truth, via apartment therapy.

23.5.12

Goodreads.

Have you guys tried goodreads? Joshua got me on it... I'm not great at it because I'm too lazy to put in every book I've ever read or even every book I hold a strong opinion about. I'm treating it like I haven't read anything before I started my account. Because of this my suggestions are crazy (it's worse than netflix even)! I have two whole sections dedicated to holocaust lit.

In Portland this last weekend I just bought Nick Hornby's 3rd installment of Believer columns and I just discovered there's going to be a fourth this year!!! Being completely caught up on an author is both wonderful and terrible.

22.5.12

Happy.

(The National Geographic photo of the day from yesterday)

Miss Goddard posted a PERFECT post this morning: What Makes You Happy? And I think everyone should follow suit. A day all about happiness! Makes me happy thinking about things that make me happy.

1. Puzzles.
2. Getting mail!
3. When my puppy chases rabbits in his sleep. So cute.

21.5.12

More ombre hair.

Red to blonde? I think yes!
Just in time for summer.
I'm feeling brave after spending the weekend in Portland.

(not mine, just some google images)

MISC.

Happy weekend! I'm having the most glorious time trekking to Portland. I'm trying not be also I'm obsessed with this Whitney Deal dress. Obsessed obsessed. I love dresses with sleeves! In fact I'm pretty much anti any dress without them these days.

This is how I want to view the world.

I am a sucker for summer blockbusters (Avengers anyone?), and this is the one I'm most excited for. Sorry Batman.

Gorgeous, all of it.

Herringbone is such a classic look. I'll never stop loving it.

When I miss the city (so all the time) I get my fix here.

True enough.. sitting by the bed in the dark is where the magic happens (Via ESB).

17.5.12

101.

We took highway 101 up from LA.
It was beautiful (we stayed in a lighthouse hostel and watched the sun set from the beach and saw the Redwood forests).

16.5.12

The Pledge, chic.

I think this is rad.

15.5.12

Bows are SOOOO in this season.

Ha! Ridiculous.
But true.

Renner and Lawrence trained with Olympians (yeah, I'm pretty jealous). A long time ago I heard a comedian on NPR talk about a world where Olympic athletes were chosen like jury duty. Getting a letter in the mail saying you are chosen to compete in the high dive! See you in nine months! I would die! Just think about the ridiculous possibilities makes me laugh every time.

14.5.12

London 2012.

Is this embarrassing?
I cry during Morgan Freeman Olympics commercials.
Not just the first time I see them either.

Do you love the Olympics? I think it's so interesting to hear why people love the winter over the summer or what events they watch religiously. In the summer Olympics I love volleyball and track and swimming (I'm pretty vanilla). It's possible I watch Olypmic events on youtube...

11.5.12

Baseball season.

It's here!
And I'm officially a kept woman, see my shirt for our three game series in June.
I love going to the park... the sun (sometimes), the garlic fry smell, fly balls, shelling peanuts. I'm glad Joshua loves sports.

Back to normal next week!

4.5.12

Friday-

Saw dolphins at the beach (it was like the shark in the water picture, only a dolphin).
Home on Tuesday.

3.5.12

Dees-nay-land!

It's Disney time!
Or it was, this last week.
It really is the happiest place on earth.

FAVORITE RIDES:
1. Star Tours
2. Space Mountain
3. Can't decide because I love them all so much!!!!

We stopped in Oakland (went to a thrift store, saw my Aunt, my mom bought a hatchet).

The view from our hotel was perfect to watch the fireworks from!

How serious does she look? Cracks me up.

With my moms fast pass I rode that bugger 3 times in 40 minutes. Good planning!

Me and John. We have a good life.

2.5.12

the drive-in.

We saw 21 Jump Street and Lockout there to kick off the outdoor movie season a couple weeks ago. I hope these all make it (although I'm going to go out a limb and guess that only Looper will)! I have dreams of a digital projector and the side of our house one day. Can't you just see the party? Popcorn and hotdogs and mallows and blankets, maybe even tents after? So fun.

The first drive-in movie I took Joshua to was 17 again... we like number movies apparently.

SEX-

Relevant magazine (not something that I read typically but it blew up facebook last month) posted an article about abstinence with some interesting postulations on why no one is a virgin anymore. More specifically 80% of 18-28 year olds (who profess Christianity) are having sex.
The article makes a case that marriage is happening later and later in life and people are having to remain abstinent for 15 years as opposed to 5 therefore it's more difficult. Another argument is this:

"As young Christians mature into their 20's, it's natural for them to reevaluate their beliefs as they strive to figure out how their faith fits into their expanding worldview. If they determine they can drink responsibly and watch movies and listen to music with a discerning spirit, is it possible the 'don't do it because it's wrong' message gets tossed aside along with all those other legalistic messages of youth? That they start to believe they can also have sex 'with discernment?'"

I see several factors influencing the growth in sexually active Christians:

There are groups 20-somethings who don't interact with people over 50 ever. EVER. Where do you gain a different opinion if you hang out with yourself all the time?! I know way more old people than young with marriages that have been successful. And for the most part they've just been through more! As a young person it's hard to see consequences and the future and our bodies take what we abuse them with and keep performing. Some perspective (watching someone with liver failure changed my drinking more than any other factor could have) can only be gained from life lived. I think this concept applies past physical damage as well.

With an emphasis on feelings I can't think of a reason you wouldn't have sex. And we live in a feelings based society. Do it because it feels good.

Finally the extension of childhood through college and beyond effects the long wait for marriage/longer temptation period. Not to go basic college psych on anyone but the more posh the life the longer childhood and lack of responsibility yes? Yes. The idea that we should be marrying like Romeo and Juliet with the lives we lead in America to me seems unwise. Adults (and I mean people in their 30's and up) aren't living within their means, aren't handling conflict within their marriages well and yet we'd expect an 18 year old fresh out of high school to have a handle on that? I know that there are many different beliefs on young marriage- the south where "ring be spring" is a real thing- but I can't imagine my 18 year old self being successful at marriage to Joshua. And I want success more desperately than I want nearly anything. More than I want sex right now for sure!

Anyway, that was kinda intense but I figured I'd put it out there.
And an article about spicing up monogamous sex.
